On September 4, 2024, an exclusive workshop was held at the Hilton Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro to discuss the barriers and solutions for financing Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in Brazil. The event brought together experts, financiers, and representatives from various institutions to drive the development of the Nature Investment Lab (NIL), a project aimed at addressing critical challenges in scaling up NbS in the country.

The workshop provided a collaborative environment for valuable exchanges among different stakeholders, focusing on creating a clear path to scale sustainable solutions that can positively impact Brazil, aligned with the country’s NDC (Nationally Determined Contributions) goals and in preparation for COP 30.

At the end of the workshop, important next steps were outlined for advancing NIL and NbS in Brazil. Among the main recommendations were:

  • Criteria Definition for Pilot Projects: It was emphasized that clear criteria must be established for selecting pilot projects that are scalable and replicable. These projects must be robust enough to attract investors and prove that NbS can be a viable solution in Brazil.
  • Collaboration Between Taskforces: The three taskforces must work in an integrated manner to ensure synergy between efforts related to regulation, transaction development, and cost reduction. This is essential for creating an environment conducive to NbS investment.
  • Focus on Tangible Results by COP 30: Participants agreed that it is crucial for Brazil to present concrete results by COP 30, demonstrating global leadership in climate solutions. This will include major projects in restoration, bioeconomy, and regenerative agriculture, supported by a favorable regulatory environment.

The workshop marked an important milestone in advancing Nature-based Solutions in Brazil. It became evident that the success of these initiatives depends on effective collaboration between diverse stakeholders, including the government, private sector, financial institutions, and local communities. By focusing on creating practical and scalable solutions, the Nature Investment Lab is positioned as an essential platform to mobilize investments and ensure that Brazil continues to lead the global sustainability agenda. The discussions and decisions made during the event will lay the groundwork for the next steps of NIL, with expected results by COP 30.
